What is In Review?
Powered by Research Square and developed in partnership with Springer Nature, In Review aims to open up the submission and peer review system to authors and others in the scientific community. The first service of its kind, In Review will provide authors with on-demand access to the status of their manuscript and will allow them to showcase their work to the wider community for comment while their manuscript is under review.
What is the benefit to authors?
By using In Review authors will be able to:
- Track the status of their manuscript, including immediate access to reviewer reports
- Get early feedback from the community that can be used to improve their paper, while demonstrating that their work is under review at a particular journal
- Invite experts to provide feedback on their work
- Create engaging discussions using direct comments and the hypothes.is open annotation tool
- Demonstrate the integrity of their work with a transparent editorial checklist
- Immediately refer others, including funders, to their paper in a citable way (as it will immediately have a DOI)
- Benefit from early sharing, such as more collaboration opportunities, earlier citations, and improved manuscripts.
What is the benefit to the community?
The wider research community will be able to:
- Comment on/see emerging science in full html format
- Find new discoveries with a fully-indexed search
- Note which editorial checks the manuscript has passed
- Gain insight into the peer review pipeline of particular manuscripts at the given journals
What journals will be using In Review?
What does it mean when I opt in to In Review?
The reviews and editor communications will continue through the Editorial Manager site as usual. You can use In Review to access up to date information on where your article is in the peer review process. In addition, readers will be able to follow the status of your manuscript during peer review, such as whether it is “out for review” as well as the number of reviewer reports received. Through a private author dashboard, you will also have access to reviewer reports as they come in.
Your manuscript will also be posted immediately to In Review and will receive a citable DOI. The community will be able to comment on, read, or cite your manuscript using the platform. Authors could take any substantive comments into account during the peer review process in order to strengthen their paper.
Please note that whether or not you opt in to this service will not affect the ultimate decision on whether your manuscript is accepted. However, if you do decide to opt in, the journal Editor may choose to take community comments into account.
Will the editor take into consideration any comments made on my manuscript on In Review?
Editors may choose to take commenting into consideration. As with traditional review, they will rely on reviewers with field expertise in forming their decision.
Does my decision to participate have any impact on the editorial decisions made by the journal?
No. Opting in will have no effect on the ultimate decision on whether your manuscript is accepted.
How do I submit a revised version of my article to In Review?
To submit a revision, you will need to submit through the manuscript tracking system, Editorial Manager. In Review only posts versions of your manuscript currently being considered by the journal.
Can I post my manuscript on a preprint server as well?
When you post to a preprint server you retain full copyright over your article, and you are therefore free to post it in as many places as you like. However, having more than one version in different places could reduce the usage counts and metrics obtained here and on the other sites, and may cause confusion to some readers.
How do I submit my own manuscript to In Review?
In order to take part in this pilot you must submit to one of the participating journals directly. Once you have selected a journal you can submit either from the In Review journal pages or the journal's website. As part of the submission process you will be offered the option to opt into the pilot.
